About Discover Worlds at Duke
Locally we focus on fostering partnerships with Durham agencies, like the Durham Rescue Mission, and other Duke student groups to raise awareness of different issues affecting our community. These include poverty, unemployment, health care, and education.
On an international level we work with the Discover Worlds non-profit organization to fund programs such as the Umubano Sister School program and the Scholars program. Umubano’s Sister School program works to build long-lasting friendships between students from the United States and students from Rwanda. The mission of the Umubano program is to empower students to participate in sustainable cross-cultural exchanges between the US and Rwanda with the goal of increasing global awareness, compassion, critical thinking, and grassroots activism. The Uyisenga Scholars Program offers orphans of the genocide a chance to get a university education in Rwanda. The scholars are chosen because of their excellent academic records and leadership skills. These orphans can be raised out of poverty through the chance of education. Since Rwanda is so densely populated, a college degree is imperative to getting a good job. The scholar’s annual tuition is $700 US dollars.
Our chapter is currently hoping to be involved in a global project of our very own. We are searching for an opportunity to become more actively involved in an issue which we as a group can strive to make a difference in. Our hopes are that we can be more than just a source of funding to an organization, but a source of social entrepreneurship. Duke Engage, a university program that sponsors student initiatives around the world, will be our source for traveling to the site and developing a dynamic relationship with the organization we chose to work with.
